In Russia, a Bosch painting of Christ strongly impacted Konstantin Zhigulin. This painting spoke directly to Zhigulin’s heart, while translated church songs seemed unattractive to him because they were “not at all related to anything in Russian culture” (Handbook p 339). Today, Zhigulin composes worshipful songs that “[touch] the heart and soul of the Russian people” by offering prayers sung directly to God, tapping into elements of traditional Russian musical culture. His music touches the hearts of non-Russians as well; his performing ensemble, Psalom, performs in the US and other countries beyond Russia. [adapted from the Handbook]
